As a Specialist Scent trainer, I'm a huge advocate for using your dog's best sense to it's full potential!

Scent work is a fun and mentally stimulating activity that taps into your dog's natural instincts. It’s a great way to keep your dog entertained, engaged, and mentally sharp while strengthening the bond between you. You don’t need to be a professional trainer or have a lot of fancy equipment to get started with scent work at home. Here are some simple games you can play with your dog to introduce them to the world of scent work.

A dog's nose is amazing!

1. The Treat Hunt

This is one of the easiest scent work games to start with, perfect for beginners. Begin by using a few of your dog’s favourite treats.

How to Play:

  • Show your dog the treat and let them watch you hide it in an easy-to-find spot.

  • Give a cue like "find it" or "search" and encourage them to use their nose to locate the treat.

  • Gradually increase the difficulty by hiding the treat in more challenging spots (under a cushion, behind a door, or in a room they’re not used to).

This game helps build your dog’s focus and ability to follow a scent trail. As your dog gets better at it, you can increase the difficulty of the hide spots or use different types of treats or scents to keep the game fresh and exciting.

2. Scented Box Game

The scented box game is an excellent way to get your dog used to finding a specific scent, and it’s easy to do with household items.

How to Play:

  • Gather several small boxes or containers and place one of your dog’s favorite treats or a scented item (like an essential oil-soaked cotton ball) in one of them.

  • Let your dog sniff all the boxes, encouraging them to use their nose to locate the box with the scent.

  • Once they find the correct box, reward them with praise or a treat.

As your dog gets more experienced, you can add more boxes and make the game more challenging. This also helps them focus on the scent rather than just the visible object.

3. Scent Trail

Scent trails are a great way to build your dog’s scent detection skills. They allow your dog to follow a scent over a distance, which mimics more advanced scent work.

How to Play:

  • Take a treat or a scented item and drag it along the floor or ground, creating a small trail.

  • Lead the trail to a hidden spot or a container, and encourage your dog to follow the trail.

  • Once they follow the scent trail and find the prize, reward them with praise or treats.

This game allows your dog to practice scenting over a longer distance and boosts their confidence as they get better at following the trail.

4. Find the Person

This is a fun game that helps your dog get accustomed to tracking human scent, which is a skill used in many scent work disciplines.

How to Play:

  • Have someone (a family member or friend) hide somewhere in the house while you keep your dog in another room.

  • When your dog is ready, give them the cue to "find [person’s name]" or "search."

  • Encourage your dog to use their nose to locate the hidden person.

  • When they find them, reward your dog with praise and a treat.

This game can be progressively made harder by hiding the person in more challenging spots or increasing the distance they need to travel.

5. Scented Toy Game

This game builds scent association with a specific toy, helping your dog identify scents more easily.

How to Play:

  • Take a small item or toy that your dog enjoys and rub it with a small amount of scent (such as essential oils, herbs, or a treat that has a strong odour).

  • Hide the toy somewhere in your home, and give your dog the cue to find it.

  • Reward your dog when they find the scented toy.

This game helps your dog learn to focus on specific scents and can be modified with different scented items to keep things interesting.

6. Find the Food Cup

The food cup game involves hiding a treat under one of several cups, which allows you to teach your dog how to search and discriminate between scents.

How to Play:

  • Place several cups or containers in a row and hide a treat under one of them.

  • Let your dog sniff around and encourage them to find which cup holds the treat.

  • When they correctly identify the cup, reward them with the treat and praise.

As your dog gets better, you can increase the number of cups or containers and make the game more complex by mixing up the scents.

7. Towel Wrap Game

This game uses towels to hide a treat, encouraging your dog to use their nose to investigate and uncover the prize.

How to Play:

  • Place a treat in the center of a towel and fold it loosely.

  • Place the wrapped towel in an area where your dog can sniff it out.

  • Encourage your dog to sniff and search for the treat, using their nose to unfold the towel and reveal the hidden prize.

This game helps strengthen your dog’s scent detection abilities and teaches them how to manipulate objects to uncover hidden items.

Tips for Success:

Keep Sessions Short and Fun: Make sure scent work games are enjoyable and engaging. Short, fun sessions are more effective than long, tedious ones.

Use Positive Reinforcement: Always reward your dog with praise or treats when they successfully complete a scent task. This will reinforce the behavior and encourage them to keep using their nose.

Start Easy: Begin with simple games and gradually increase the difficulty as your dog becomes more experienced and confident.

Patience is Key: Not every dog will get the hang of scent work immediately, so be patient and give them plenty of time to figure things out.

Conclusion:

Scent work is a great way to engage your dog’s mind and body while having fun together. These simple games are easy to set up at home and can be enjoyed by dogs of all ages and breeds. Whether you're starting with a treat hunt or progressing to more complex scent trails, your dog will love the mental challenge and the opportunity to use their incredible sense of smell. So, grab some treats, find a few toys or objects, and start exploring the world of scent work with your dog today!
